Welcome to my portfolio!
Throughout my life, I have enjoyed almost parallel careers in both education and horticulture. In the field of horticulture, my background includes employment in private estates, reputable nurseries in both the United States and Europe, a world-renowned botanical garden and a 450-acre city park. My articles have appeared in professional journals and gardening magazines and I have lectured internationally at universities, botanical gardens and symposiums, for both laypersons and professional horticulturists. My experience in education varies from training apprentices in Europe to educating college students in both Europe and the United States, to a position as Coordinator of Adult Education at a botanical garden. Radcliffe College, the University of Massachusetts and Anhalt University in Germany employed me as an adjunct instructor but I taught full time at Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury, CT for seven years, retiring in 2013. 2010 was a significant year for me, as I received that year's Teaching Award from the American Horticultural Society as well as the Academic Award from the Perennial Plant Association and was nominated for the U.S. Professors of the Year Award.
This portfolio is meant to be an informational and, perhaps, inspirational resource for students entering the field of horticulture and for professional horticulturists who are contemplating becoming educators. It is intended to provide examples of the opportunities for horticultural educators and to illustrate the paths one might take and activities one may engage in. It also presents aspects of the graduate program I undertook at Colorado State.
